Fashion Fair, originally the fashion feature of Ebony magazine, began as a traveling runway show in 1958, featuring African American models, challenging traditional white-oriented perceptions of beauty and style, and emphasizing the empowerment of black women across the nation. In its 51+ years, the fair produced more than 5,000 shows and raised more than $50 million for charity.
The Ebony Fashion Fair Alumni was birthed out of the hearts and souls of Ebony Fashion Fair Models, who
wanted to keep the legacy of the
Ebony Fashion Fair Tour and the
vision of Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, alive
and thriving.
Ebony Fashion Fair was more than a fashion show; it was an experience that infused culture, pride, confidence and style into the African American community, while raising funds for African American nonprofit organizations, fraternities, colleges, churches, hospitals and awarding scholarships.
The Ebony Fashion Fair Alumni is set to focus on preserving the legacy and history of the Fashion Fair Tour and Johnson Publishing Company, through our experiences, while illuminating a fresh pathway of light into the new decade providing an innovative platform, to share the past which defines the future.
Beyond the 51-years, Ebony Fashion Fair Alumni, will use their cumulative voices, of its history to be the story tellers of today and the impact that the Tour had on Black America. We are breathing life into a new chapter of the Fashion Fair legacy, that will edify and support the African American community by curating innovative concepts, while empowering and inspiring future leaders.
In 2010, former Ebony Fashion Fair Model, Tanya Du'Shay, pondered the thought, that it would be a good idea to reunite all of the former Ebony Fashion Fair Models, for a reunion. She assembled a committee of former models and in the summer of 2013, over 200+ models, former commentators and staff convened to commemorate their legacy.
Together we stand in unity, 500 strong, representing, our journey, Black History & American History.
